F6 Chinese Hybrid














In a country where 5.2 million cars were bought last year, where nearly 10 million cars are produced each year, and where "environmental protection" is a major buzz word, you might think that the Chinese have been ramping up their cheap, domestic-made hybrid cars. Nope. The only hybrids currently available are Japanese, the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic. And while they're assembled in China, importing the parts from Japan means heavy taxes, which means that these cars costs double in China than what they do in the US. That's why only 417 Priuses were sold in China last year.
Then, at the Beijing auto show last week, GM got lots of press for announcing it would sell its new hybrid in China. But the cost won't be much better than the Prius, around $40,000. For a country where the average car costs less than a quarter of that, where demand is growing for big cars, and where fuel prices are kept artificially low by the government, the future of green cars seems dim.
But enter the Chinese automakers. Yes, big cars are in but so are small and green models, and they have a few that, while still largely concepts, are affordable -- and could be invading overseas markets in the next few years.
As GM was stirring up green buzz for the June release of their Hybrid LaCrosse, domestic companies were showing off their own offerings, with prices starting around $10,000. By 2010, some 30 different hybrid models will be available in China. Good news for China, and because of economies of scale, and Chinese exports, everybo.

BYD: F6DM and F3DM
The "DM" or "Dual Mode" F6DM and F3DM both have a 1.0L gasoline engine combined with a 50kW motor and a 20kW power generator. Their 19.8kWh batteries alone are capable of running 100km, the company says. The FD6M initial cost? 50,000 yuan ($7,150) more expensive than the base model, so in total around 150,000 yuan (about US$21,500). Half the price of the Prius in China now.
As Mike points out, this car could beat the Chevy Volt as the world's first plug-in hybrid.

MG6 Sedan
















The MG6 sedan has finally launched in China after months of speculation. The MG6 sedan is based on the Roewe 550 sedan but taking on the MG corporate beak and also a new seat or rear lights, it looks very different to its almost bland appearing 550 cousin now:

The MG6 sedan will share its powertrains with its fastback sibling, which is a 1.8 naturally aspirated block and also the 160bhp turbo assisted model. Pricing was not announced at today’s launch at the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, but it is expected to be similar to the fastback model, so in the region of 128,800rmb to 192,800rmb. As with the fastback MG6, the design was carried in the UK by SAIC’s MG-Motors design team who are also responsible for the soon to launch MG3 and Roewe 550. A UK launch of the two cars is expected to take place in early 2011, but MG fans will be able to get a taste of both of them at this years Top Gear Live! event at Earls Court in November.

Huatai B11 on display at long last!


Huatai invited a select group of people to come and look at its stunning B11 sedan over the weekend, despite the number ‘Do not take photos’ signs, many people still took photos which eventually made their way to the internet:

Huatai are aiming to enter the premium auto segment, a market that has been largely overlooked by Chinese manufacturers that are on a continual race to the bottom of the price barrel with ever cheaper models, Huatai on the other hand have seen a niche market that has not yet been entered into by the majority of Chinese car manufacturers, and that is the semi premium segment. So far only Chery and Brilliance have had the testicular fortitude required to take on the JV car makers with Chinese premium cars. The interior and the exterior are both looking excellent, and could take on mid level JV cars such as the last generation Mazda6 with relative ease. Under the hood, diesel engines appear to rule the roost with Huatai building 2.0T and 1.5T diesel engines for the B11, which will be mated to 5 speed manual and 4 speed automatic gearboxes. The introduction of diesel engines may indicate that Huatai plan to take this car to Europe where the love of the black stuff runs high. The B11 is expected to be built in Inner Mongolia at their new factory in Ordos and should be on the market in June, although this date is likely to be pushed back.

Chinese Chevy Lova Gives Clues To Next-Generation Chevy Aveo


We love seeing spy shots of cars we've never heard of, which is why we were interested in scoping out this Chinese-market Chevy Lova. As you can see for yourself, though, it didn't take much sleuthing to identify the lines as those of the Chevy Aveo, but not exactly the one we're familiar with. The Lova has a Malibu-esque front end and tail treatment, while the interior is significantly upgraded over the current US Aveo (and Chinese Lova). We've already gotten some idea of what the LA-bound 2009 Aveo5 will bring us, so is this car destined to be the 2010 Chevy Aveo?
